Be Nice to Seniors

I was eating at Jack's Urban Eats in Sac when I noticed a well dressed, very polite older gentleman ordering food. He was by himself & looked to be somewhere upwards of 80 years old. It took him awhile to get his wallet out, pay for his food & put the change away. The young girl at the counter was friendly & patient. Then along came two woman dressed as if they had never seen a day of work in their lives, oblivious to their surroundings, chatting about what 'she said' and 'can you believe she would even say such a thing'. The paths of the man & the woman crossed...much to the man's disadvantage. They pushed past him as if he were invisible. The door shut literally in his face as it closed at their backs without notice. It made me think...will we all become invisible someday? Does our society really think that aging is such a hideous process that we turn our heads in hopes that it not infect us? I remember toward the end of my grandmother's life an incident where she was rushed to get her credit card out...she stumbled (she was nearly blind at that point) & the contents of her wallet cascaded to the ground. She was humiliated; her pride bruised; made to feel like an old fool.
So up on my soapbox I step:
BE PATIENT with our seniors! If we are lucky, we'll all be there someday.
BE KIND to our seniors! These are the people who made things possible for us.
BE AWARE of our seniors! They are not invisible...make sure they know it.

In hindsight I wish I had said something to those ladies; put my mashed potatoes down & made a statement.
